Lightfast 25 - August/September 2020

Dear friends of finest artists‘ colours!

This special year is a year full of changes - but one thing which has not changed - in our experience over the past few months - is the unbridled enthusiasm of our artists for finest artists' colours.

In this newsletter issue, the focus is on pastel painting. You will find interesting facts about the correct fixing of pastel colours and a typical summer motif, a flamingo, painted step by step for you by the French artist Cindy Barillet. In addition, we recommend the new black gesso as a background for designs in a very unusual look.

We wish you a good time, stay creative and healthy!

NEW: Black gesso (50515)

With this black gesso, we offer our artists an exciting product for creating black, absorbent painting surfaces. This fine primer is then suitable for oil, acrylic and gouache painting. On the rich black surface, the colours develop their very own effect.

The black gesso in the 250 ml bottle is available as a special offer product for a limited period in art material shops.

The gesso, like the Schmincke white gesso (50518), is applied in thin layers, if necessary, several times, on clean, dry and grease-free surfaces. After drying, it offers an unusual painting ground for your individual works on black!

Did you know... how to fix pastel paintings correctly?

To protect against harmful influences, works of art should also be given a final treatment. This concerns in particular pastel paintings, which should be fixed, but also watercolour paintings can be fixed.

Why should I fix my pastel painting?

With a pastel painting the pigment layers are directly on the surface of the painting with almost no binding agent. They do not form a firm bond with the substrate. Without fixing, the pigments can therefore gradually trickle or smear off the painting. Pastel paintings should therefore be fixed with a spray fixative.

BLOG: Pastel painting – Flamingo

with Cindy Barillet

Pastel painting with the Schmincke extra-soft pastels is always a special pleasure as the softness and the enormous palette of 400 colours allow wonderful brilliant results. As I love painting animals, I would like to present a step by step flamingo painting.
