Combining oil colours properly: What you need to know about the Schmincke oil colour range
Schmincke offers artists a wide range of high-quality oil colours and oil mediums – from classic oil colours and resin-based oil colours to water-mixable oil colours. The range is complemented by numerous painting mediums, primers and finishing treatments.
We are frequently asked about the compatibility of the various products. Fortunately, the Schmincke oil colour range is designed in such a way that most products can be used interchangeably.
All Schmincke oil paints can be mixed together
Whether MUSSINI, NORMA Professional, NORMA Blue or Akademie Oil – all classic Schmincke oil colours are fully mixable with one another.
MUSSINI, as a resin-based oil colour, can also be combined with traditional oil colours without restriction or used in combination with them in a single painting.
One special product is NORMA Blue, Schmincke’s water-mixable oil colour. This, too, can be mixed without any problems with NORMA Professional, MUSSINI and Akademie Öl.
An important note: if you wish to retain the water-mixability, the ratio of classic oil colour to water should not exceed 4 : 1.
Oil mediums can be used across all ranges
The same applies to oil mediums: they can be used regardless of the specific colour range.
A medium labelled ‘MUSSINI Medium’, for example, is not exclusively suitable for MUSSINI, but can also be used with other Schmincke oil colours. This applies equally to primers, varnishes and other oil mediums.
For NORMA Blue, there are also five specially developed Blue mediums. They are formulated in such a way that the colours remain water-mixable.
Good to know: With the exception of painting medium Blue, all Blue mediums can also be used with traditional oil and resin-based oil colours. Conversely, whilst NORMA Blue colours can also be used with traditional oil painting mediums, doing so means they lose their properties as water-mixable oil colours.
MUSSINI®, NORMA® Professional and NORMA® Blue – three top-quality products with different strengths
MUSSINI, NORMA Professional and NORMA Blue are all among Schmincke’s finest artists’ oil colours. The difference is not in their quality, but in their formulation and the resulting properties.
MUSSINI is a resin-based oil colour that is unique worldwide. In addition to selected vegetable oils, it contains dissolved natural dammar resin. This special formula enables a particularly harmonious and largely tension-free drying process and gives the colours their characteristic painting properties.
NORMA Professional is a classic artists’ oil colour based on high-quality vegetable oil blends. The carefully balanced formula ensures excellent pigment retention, high adhesion and minimal tendency to yellowing.
NORMA Blue is a water-mixable artists’ oil colour that combines the advantages of classical oil painting with particularly straightforward application. It allows almost odourless working without solvents and is therefore perfect for painting indoors or without a dedicated studio. Furthermore, NORMA Blue is vegan, free from preservatives and therefore particularly suitable for people with allergies.
All three ranges offer a wide selection of colours – with 108 shades in the MUSSINI range (including numerous brilliant glazing colours), 84 shades in the NORMA Professional range and 48 shades in the NORMA Blue range.
Which oil colour is the best one for me?
The choice between MUSSINI, NORMA Professional and NORMA Blue is not a question of quality, but of personal painting style and the desired characteristics.
From our many years of experience, we know that many professional artists use the ranges side by side. This allows them to combine the respective strengths in the best possible way and utilise them individually for their own work.
