Final treatment (all painting techniques)

The right final treatment for every work of art

A successful work of art deserves to be protected from harmful influences so that it does not lose any of its brilliance and luminosity even after many years. In addition, it is often desirable to change or standardise the surface of a picture. These tasks are performed by special finishing mediums. In principle, a distinction is made between fixatives that strengthen the paint layers, permanent finishing varnishes that cannot be removed, and reversible finishing varnishes that can be removed at any time with a suitable solvent. There is also a special type of varnish for oil painting: intermediate or retouching varnishes. What they all have in common is that they are applied in the thinnest possible layers to the well-dried surface of the painting.

In principle, the following options are available:

  • with a wide soft varnish brush (varnishes, lacquers)
  • with a special fixative/atomiser (fixatives)
  • with a spray can (fixatives, varnishes)
  • with a pump spray (fixatives, varnishes)
  • with a spray gun (varnishes)
  • with a paint roller (varnishes)
