Solvents, thinners and cleaning agents

How to clean and dilute your paints and painting tools

Many artists' colours and tools can be used directly with water. In oil and tempera painting, however, special organic solvents are required to dilute paints and tools and to clean tools such as brushes or palette knives. The subject of ‘varnishing’ cannot be realised without solvents either. The classic among them is certainly turpentine oil (50024, 50102), which is obtained from coniferous woods. It is an ideal thinner for oil colours, oil auxiliaries and varnishes based on white spirit, as well as a solvent for dammar and mastic resins. The synthetic alternative, turpentine substitute (50019), has very similar properties.
However, it is not possible to produce a mastic solution with it. There are also some much less odorous solvent mixtures such as citrus turpentine (50013), turpentine (50023) or Diluent N (50026). They can be used to dilute oil paints, but not for oil auxiliaries or varnish solutions. Additional specialists with a stronger dissolving power, such as Brush Cleaner (50051) or Eco Brush Cleaner (50052), are required to dissolve already dried oil and acrylic paints.

Our range is completed by particularly effective cleaning agents for airbrush guns,
AERO CLEAN RAPID (50606) and for heavily soiled lino printing rollers, LINO CLEAN (50903).
ATTENTION: Organic solvents should only be used in rooms with good ventilation.
